Q: What’s the sign that a fan clutch’s return spring is getting weak?
A: The fan will take longer to slow down after the engine cools—instead of stopping or slowing quickly, it keeps spinning for a long time. For mechanical clutches, this happens because the weak spring can’t push the silicone oil back into the reservoir fast enough. A weak spring won’t cause immediate overheating, but it will increase fuel use, so it’s best to replace the spring or the whole clutch.
Q: Can a fan clutch be damaged by a sudden drop in engine temperature (e.g., driving from a hot desert to a cold mountain)?
A: No, it can handle temperature changes. Fan clutches are designed to adapt to varying temperatures—they disengage when the engine cools, even if the drop is sudden. The only risk is if the clutch was already faulty (e.g., stuck engaged), the sudden cold might make the fan run unnecessarily, but it won’t damage the clutch itself.
