Q: Why do mechanics always recommend replacing the belt along with the fan clutch?
A: This is a standard practice based on experience and reliability. The old belt has worn and stretched according to the old clutch's operation. Its length and tooth profile are "set" to the old part. Installing a new clutch might slightly change the alignment or operating conditions. Reusing the old belt could lead to incorrect tension, causing slippage (noise, insufficient cooling) or premature wear. Since the belt is already removed to access the clutch, replacing it with a new one avoids paying labor costs again soon if the old belt fails, making it a more economical and reliable choice.
Q: How do failure symptoms differ between electric fans and silicone fluid clutch fans?
A: Their failure symptoms differ quite a bit. Silicone Fluid Clutch failures are more "mechanical": either seized (permanently engaged), showing symptoms like loud noise when cold and high fuel consumption; or failed disengagement (permanently disengaged), causing the engine to overheat easily at idle when hot.
